"chemtrails: fantasy or fiction?" by dr. finger, atmospheric expert
 |
over the centuries, there have existed many slow-witted observers of the sky. in stark contrast to the brilliance of copernicus was the abject stupidity of most of the rest of the world's population. with the advent of heavier-than-air flight, the populace had ever more opportunities to stare, mouth agape, drooling, finger in nose, at machines in the sky. jet powered, hyper-efficient, swept-winged aircraft now dominate the air overhead, and in the last 30 years have caused more than their fair share of irresponsible speculation in the world of conspiracy and ufology.
for instance, there are those who claim they captured (on tape!) the illusive triangular lighted ufo that terrorized newfoundland last month. little do they know that they just recorded an airbus on final.

it's exactly this sort of conjecture that got the ball rolling on the concept of "chemtrails." believers describe chemtrails as deliberate airborne-delivered patterns of chemical-laden smog. even better, this smog is "sprayed" by commercial or military jet aircraft. they insist it is a conspiracy that targets the general population, and that chemtrails cause all manner of sickness: unemployment, general laziness, and vague, hantu-virus-like symptoms.
as is the ritual with these internet based conspiracies, you have your true believers, and you have your naysayers. i count myself in the latter group, mainly because i trust the word of meteorologists and professional pilots who have gone on record to debunk chemtrails. i mean, you have to trust 'em. have you ever flown? i guarantee that's not the "webmaster" of chemtrails.com in the cockpit.

here's the story: contrails (condensation-trails) form when the water vapor from engine exhaust meets the frigid temperatures at altitude. depending on wind, temperature, and humidity, the contrail can persist anywhere from seconds to hours. it might even spread into something resembling a cirrus cloud. it's the same process that allows you to see your breath in the cold months. it's definitely not an ominous conspiracy.

chemtrail believers have convinced a goodly number of panicky web users that persistent contrails are something to fear. in their clamor to accuse the government of foul play, they miss the nugget of truth contained in the science of the sky.
i have my doubts about chemtrail conspiracies, to say the least. the government wants healthy taxpayers. they'd save that kind of mass experimentation for a place like guam, the marshall islands, or detroit.
