"stonehenge revealed"
by nathaniel

stonehenge is undeniably beautiful and mysterious. legends give credit to many different groups from the druids to king arthur for erecting stonehenge, but to this day, scientists do not have a plausible explanation. popular theories include that stonehenge was a giant calendar, a place of worship, or a message left by aliens.

the english monument was erected around 2500 BC according to the carbon dating of some of the 400 skeletons buried around stonehenge. that is over 1500 years before the rise of the druids, and 500 years before the first pyramids were built in egypt. the stones weigh up to 45 tons each and had to be imported.

stonehenge is the most famous of over six hundred standing stone rings in the british isles. it is estimated that it would have taken 25 generations of people to complete the construction. stonehenge consists of three circles. on the outside is a circle of thirty trilithons - two large pillars with a lentil, or cross section, on top set in a groove to remain level. inside of this circle is another circle that once had at least seven trilithons. the inner circle is a pit lined with smaller stones.

ancient myths and even the bible tell stories of a race of great giants that roamed the world. these giants would have had no problem carrying these enormous boulders over what we think of as great distances. they carried them to a lovely spot of countryside and sat them in a ring which became a social gathering spot. the trilithons served as chairs and the pit was perfect for containing a bonfire. twice a year, at the summer and winter solstice, a representative of each of the giant tribes would meet at stonehenge to discuss power, politics, and share gossip. the leaders would sit in the inner stools while their entourage would occupy the outer benches. they could sit in comfort and warmth, singing their campfire songs and roasting humongous marsh mellows. the bodies buried nearby are the remains of their meals.  for these large creatures, stonehenge was nothing more than a popular starbucks.

were these giant titans killed off by a race of gods called the olympians as told in greek myths? did they die off from diseases and other natural causes or did the tiny humans, tired of oppression, band together to rid britan of their common enemy as was told in the legends of arthur? if stonehenge was the great meeting place, then the other monoliths in the united kingdom were the home bases of these clans of giants. these tribes were always competing for land and power and probably killed each other one by one in epic battles that shook the countryside.

whatever the cause of their destruction, the outcome of their race was the same as for the dinosaurs. the giants became extinct and all they left behind to mark their empire were their campsites, the greatest of which we call stonehenge.
